PostSubject: Constitutional Empire of Imperial Arcand   Sat Jul 03, 2010 4:58 am

Flag of the Arcand Empire since 1407

Leader/Monarch: Emperor Edmund Arcand II
Government Type: Constitutional Monarchy/Constitutional Empire
Currency: Arcandian/Imperial Sterling
Language: Arcandian
Population: 60 million [homeland] 750 million - 1 billion [approx. within Empire]

Arcand is a small island located in the Northern Seas, separated from the mainland continents that dominate the planet. Being an island, it lead to the nation's inhabitants being isolated from the rest of the world over the millennia, resulting in the limited early knowledge of technology and philosophy, outside of the basics of copper smiting and early forms of paganism.

Around the end of the 1st Millennia, the island of Arcand became common ground for the pillaging of its resources by the mainland nations. Some of the pillagers began to settle, bringing with them a wider knowledge of technology as well as other religious beliefs. These settlers soon began to set up expansive tribal communities, which eventually spread to the development of several kingdoms covering the island. These early kingdoms were usually at war with each other, until King Decemini 1st united the kingdoms under one rule during the Great Helson Invasion during the 1400's, in which the newly established Arcand Nation was victorious.

The invention of the steam engine in 1700's, combined with the discovery of rich coal seams within the country, this lead to Arcand becoming one of the world's first Industrialised Nations. Arcand used its industrial power to help quickly build and develop a large international empire, enforced with a strong military backing. The Arcand Empire remained the planet's largest empire up to its peak in the 1950's, until a series of rebellions in several colonies lead to the empire reducing its size up to almost a half. Nevertheless, the Royal Arcand Empire still remains to be the largest current Empire, though no longer controlled by a Monarch, but instead lead to locally established governments, whom swear an oath to the Royal Arcand Empire.

The strength of the Arcand Empire was tested heavily during the Great War (1905-1927) and the Atari Range Crisis (1943-1948), in which saw the true military potential of the empire. Within the Great War's two decade long conflict there were many changes within the nation as it struggled to pay for the ever costly price of war, both financially, but also with resources and manpower. The conflict saw many positive changes in the country, including the decreased power of the Monarchy and the increased shift in power towards Democratic Government, as well as the advancement of technology including the massive development and deployment of internal combustion engines, aircraft, radar and wireless communication. The reliance on oil as a resource helped repay the cost of war with the discovery of many oil sources throughout the empire, some of which were sold off to oil thirsty nations.

Since the end of the Great War, the Arcand Empire continues to hold diplomatic grudges against the Anglia, which normally is displayed publicly with the occasional overt military exercises and demonstrations with Allied nations along their national borders. One of these exercises along the Anglia/Xi-Tzu border quickly escalated into a full blown conflict in 1943; starting the Atari Range Crisis. After Anglian troops violated Xi-Tzu's border, Arcand was quick to respond; forcing the Empire into a naval bombardment of several Anglian cities and a full blown counter-invasion. The empire still carries out the Strategic Defence Initiative policy, in which it publicly shows support for anti-Anglia nations as well as maintaining a nuclear threat against the Anglians, utilising military bases throughout the world to house various forms of weapons.

The majority of the citizens throughout the empire see living under Arcand rule as an positive advantage, as many of the colonies who left the empire continue to suffer from economic instability, as well as being the subject of much internal corruption within the governments. However, some see Arcand rule as an outdated philosophy, which leads to the occasional acts of terror throughout the empire. In accordance to these events, the Arcand government lifted the banned use of the death penalty, only now using it on those convicted of 'Treason' and 'Acts of Terror Towards The Empire'. The majority of those convicted end up in front of a firing squad, though lethal injections are becoming more common practice.

The Arcand Empire is still considered to be the dominant global power, despite its much smaller size, using its economic and military status to reinforce their opinions in international affairs. However, the Empire still prefers to solve issues diplomatically or through the use of economic embargoes, rarely using its potential military strength to resolve matters.

The Empire's member states remain to be Caissic, Ugul, Kanul, Moldadum and Yano, with Ino-Kai and Xi-Tzu ruled by independent governments, but still swear allegiance to the Arcand Empire. The Empire also continues to maintain small colonial islands off the coast of Lotemukipe originally used for research purposes, but increasingly with the discovery of oil under the continent, these islands are used as commercial hubs in the exploration and drilling for oil. Ugul, Kanul and Moldadum are largely unpopulated towards the central areas of these territories, which remain to stay mostly inhabited by local tribes who remain highly hostile towards Arcandian citizens living along the coastline.

With the institution of slavery still rampant among most of the world, the Arcand Empire was among the first to abolish the practice in 1824, most of her assets in the Empire doing the same. The Empire has seen to it personally to stamp out the archaic practice within her borders, even giving safe haven to runaway slaves throughout the empire and permitting either escaped or freed slaves to enter their country. If they so wish within the time frame, they can undergo the naturalization process. In the case of the latter, the former-slave is asked to serve in the armed forces for a mandatory two years in either a combat or non-combat role.

Fortnum M1 Heavy Tank

Developed in the 1940's as a Heavy Tank to serve along on the frontline in service of the Arcand Empire, providing anti-armour support for infantry platoons and heavy tank brigades on the battlefield.

After successful deployment of the Fortnum F1 Medium Tank, Arcand's tank designers soon realised that in order to maintain a superior power on the battlefields they would need to field a superior tank. Development of the M1 began back in the early 1930s, but as the technologies surrounding tank design evolved; so did the M1's blueprint. In total, the M1 spent a decade on paper as its designers wished to perfect the engineering before building more than a few prototypes.

Finally in 1942, the Fortnum M1 [known as the "Phalanx"] was fielded; first serving with the Imperial Dragoon Guard. The Phalanx served with great distinction in the brief 3rd Opium War in August 1942; the Phalanx tanks spearheading a swift invasion force deep into Xi-Tzu territory; capturing all the major metropolitan cities within half a week.

As veterans of the conflict came home singing praises for the Phalanx, the Ministry of Defence placed orders of over a thousand units to serve in nearly all of the tank regiments.

The Phalanx was widely used by nearly all of the regiments that fielded tanks, utilising the strong combination of fire-power, mobility and armour to wipe away the competition of every other tank of its class.

Following experience learnt in the Xi-Tzu campaigns, Arcandian scientists developed and mounted the Type A Active-Infrared Nightvision scope; giving tank commanders a clear view of the night-time battlefield and a distinct advantage over the enemy.

The image depicts the M1 Mk.I in a classic Arcand paint scheme, "Long Live the Emperor!" slogan, Commanding Officer, an Arcand Roundel on the turret and the Arcand flag on the side-skirt.

Fortnum M1 Mk.I [with Mk.II Turret] Specs:

Weight: 40 metric tonnes

Width: 3.65 m (11 ft 11 in)
Height: 2.55 m (8 ft 3 in)
Crew: 5
Armour: 120 mm Turret, 140 mm Hull, 100 mm Rear [ Rolled Homogeneous Steel ]

Main Armament: 90 mm Heavy Anti-Tank Gun
Secondary Armament: Swivel Mounted .303 HMG, Top-Mounted .303 LMG
Engine: 650 hp
Power/weight: 16.25 hp/t

Arcand Locomotive Company 'Rapier' Mk.Ib Medium Tank

Developed in the 1940's as a Medium Tank to serve along on the frontline in service of the Arcand Empire, providing fire support for infantry platoons and heavy tank brigades on the battlefield.

The "Rapier" was developed in light of a requirement for a replacement of the F1 Medium Tank, but with a low-cost requirement. The "Rapier" went into direct competition with the F2 to fill the requirement. Although the "Rapier" performed better in the maintenance and durability trials; it lost to the F2.

The Mk.Ib was a major upgrade to the vehicle; increasing the armour capacity with the addition of the side-skirt and the expansion of the turret. The expanded turret allowed for larger munitions; thus accommodating for larger calibre guns and the hardware for the Type A Active-Infrared Nightvision scope.

Following experience learnt in the Xi-Tzu campaigns, Arcandian scientists developed and mounted the Type A Active-Infrared Nightvision scope; giving tank commanders a clear view of the night-time battlefield and a distinct advantage over the enemy.

However, some regiments ignored the War Ministry's trials; adopted the "Rapier" as their official Light Tank.

The image depicts the "Rapier" Mk.I in a classic Arcand paint scheme, an Arcand Roundel on the Mk.Ib turret with Type A Active Infrared Nightvision scope and the Arcand flag on the side-skirt.

ALC "Rapier" Mk.I Specs:

Weight: 22 metric tonnes
Length: 6.07 m (19 ft 11 in)
Width: 2.65 m (8 ft 8 in)
Height: 2.69 m (8 ft 10 in)

Main Armament: 75 mm Light Anti-Tank Gun
Secondary Armament: Co-axial 7.5 mm Light Machine Gun
Engine: 340 hp
Power/weight: 15.45 hp/t
Suspension: Coil Spring
Fuel capacity: 500 litres

Fortnum F2b Medium Tank

It was during the development of the Fortnum M1 that Arcandian tank designers realised that the F1 would be out-dated and unable to keep up with the remarkably higher performance of the M1. Wishing to keep costs down, the F2's hull was fashioned from an M1; rather than designing a new hull from scratch.

The tanks armament was increased in comparison to the F1, now brandishing a 75mm light anti-tank gun or the 40mm light anti-tank gun (with squeeze-bore adaptor); showing it could hold its own against heavier tanks until reinforcements arrived.

The F2 was deployed along side the M1 in 1942; where it served gallantly in several dozen low-intensity conflicts around the world. Crews at first were uncomfortable with the unusually large turret design, but this soon departed as the turret proved itself by saving many dozens on lives from potentially deadly fire.

Following the success of Arcand Locomotive Companies Mk.Ib Rapier update, Fortnum acquired the rights to trial ALC's turret on the F2. Following successful trials, the F2b was put into production; proving itself to be a resounded success on the battlefield.

The image depicts the F2b in a classic Arcand paint scheme, Arcand Roundel on the fuselage and the Arcand flag on the side-skirt.

.303 Light Machine Gun
Engine: 600 hp
Power/weight: 18.75 hp/t

Durable Combat Uniform Mk.I [DCU] of the Arcandian Army (c1940/50)

As the nature of combat evolved throughout the world, so to did the needs of the normal infantryman. Arcand historically was weary of issuing uniforms that did not include the Imperial colours; Red and Blue. However, the increased pressure on the War Ministry from both the Army and the widowed population demanded a change in this policy.

After several years of designing and small-scale manufacturing, the Ministry of War's Department of Logistics produced the final uniform; the Durable Combat Uniform Mk.I [DCU].

The image depicts a standard infantryman of the Imperial Army of Arcand, wielding the .280 Weldon Rifle [heavy based upon the British .280 "Janson" EM-2 Rifle).

Fortnum M2 Heavy Tank

Developed in the late 1940's as a Heavy Tank to serve along on the frontline in service of the Arcand Empire, providing anti-armour support for infantry platoons and heavy tank brigades on the battlefield.

After successful deployment of the Fortnum M1 Heavy Tank, Arcand's tank designers soon realised that in order to maintain a superior power on the battlefields they would need to field a superior tank. Development of the M2 began soon after the deployment of the M1, but as the technologies surrounding tank design evolved; so did the M2's blueprint.

Finally in 1949, the Fortnum M2 [known as the "Hoplite"] was fielded; first serving with the 1st Imperial Tank Regiment. The Hoplite served with great distinction in the brief 1st Anglia War in November 1949; the Hoplite tanks smashed through Anglian defence forces and lead the advance on Anglia's capital; just two days after the amphibious landings.

As veterans of the conflict came home singing praises for the Hoplite, the Ministry of Defence placed orders of over a hundred units to serve in all of Arcand's elite tank regiments.

The Hoplite was not as widely used as the M1, as the cost of building the M2s was far greater than the M1. However, the tide of any Arcandian battle was turned in their favour once the M2s were deployed; the vast level of armour and firepower was nearly unmatched.

Following experience learnt in the Xi-Tzu campaigns, Arcandian scientists developed and mounted the Type A Active-Infrared Nightvision scope; giving tank commanders a clear view of the night-time battlefield and a distinct advantage over the enemy.

Durable Combat Uniform Mk.II [DCU] of the Arcandian Army (c1950)

As the nature of combat evolved throughout the world, so to did the needs of the normal infantryman. Arcand historically was weary of issuing uniforms that did not include the Imperial colours; Red and Blue. However, the increased pressure on the War Ministry from both the Army and the widowed population demanded a change in this policy.

After the successful introduction of the Mk.I DCU equipment, the Ministry of War began to work on its successor: the Mk.II. Little actually changed; except the replacement of a new helmet, personal short-wave radio [embedded into the helmet] and a bullet resistant combat vest.

The new equipment enabled soldiers to keep in contact with the rest of the regiment for enhanced combat-situation awareness, whilst the combat vest increased the survival rates of soldiers shot in combat; reducing gunshot wounds by around a half.

Fortnum H1 Super Heavy Tank

Developed in the late 1940's as a Super Heavy Tank to serve along on the frontline in service of the Arcand Empire, providing anti-armour support for infantry platoons and heavy tank brigades on the battlefield.

The H1 Super Heavy Tank was developed to counter any armour threats which the Fortnum M Series could not contain. Conceived with heavy armour and firepower in mind, Fortnum's engineers slaved away for nearly 6 years on the tank [most of it spent configuring the engine].

Due to the massive costs involved in building this tanks, very few were ordered by the Arcandian government; less than a hundred. Of those hundred, only half are ever on active service; the remainder either mothballed or on a 3 month annual maintenance schedule.

Following experience learnt in the Xi-Tzu campaigns, Arcandian scientists developed and mounted the Type A Active-Infrared Nightvision scope; giving tank commanders a clear view of the night-time battlefield and a distinct advantage over the enemy.

The image depicts the H1 Mk.I in a classic Arcand paint scheme, an Arcand Roundel on the turret and the Arcand flag on the side-skirt.

Developed in the late 1940's as a Medium Tank to serve along on the frontline in service of the Arcand Empire, providing fire support for infantry platoons and heavy tank brigades on the battlefield.

The "Claymore" was developed in light of a requirement for a replacement of the "Rapier" Mk.II Medium Tank, but with a low-cost requirement. The "Claymore" was developed with the concept that Medium tanks should be faster, more manoeuvrable and pack a greater punch.

The optional expanded turret allowed for larger munitions; thus accommodating for larger calibre guns and the hardware for the Type A Active-Infrared Nightvision scope.

Following experience learnt in the Xi-Tzu campaigns, Arcandian scientists developed and mounted the Type A Active-Infrared Nightvision scope; giving tank commanders a clear view of the night-time battlefield and a distinct advantage over the enemy.

However, some regiments ignored the War Ministry's trials; adopted the "Claymore" as their official Medium Tank.

The Mk.I was conceived in the light of advancements in engine design and battlefield experience; utilising the frame of the Mk.I as a base.
